Why should you switch to Nontoxic Deodorant & 5 of my favorites

As many of you know, I’ve been working at the Poison Control Center as a Registered Nurse and learning all about the chemicals in our products and the medications we take on a daily basis. The Poison Control Center has been so interesting and has furthered my passion into finding non-toxic substitutes for my everyday products. Today’s post is featuring a question I get asked A LOT: Non-toxic deodorant.

There are many studies out there that show how dangerous toxic deodorants are. In the medical field there is much controversy over this topic because we know that in order to release toxins you must sweat them out. We also know that we use deodorant so that we don’t sweat, which actually is thus blocking the body’s ability to filter out the toxins. Some researchers even believe that because the armpit is so close to the breast many breast cancers are actually caused from deodorant use and thus the inability of our body to eliminate toxins. // I’m not sure where I stand on that argument however, I do know that I am making the switch to nontoxic products and this is just one step forward.

Surprisingly, this is one of the first things that people usually switch over in their routine however, it can also be one of the hardest switches because we sweat every single day and need protection. Many people say that nontoxic products don’t work as well and honestly, nowadays that it just not true. I’ve been testing all the nontoxic deodorants out there and am giving you a very honest review of them all. // *Disclaimer: I’m not a super sweaty person so take that into account when reading my review*

Schmidt Deodorant: I started out my search with this brand. I tried the Bergamot & Lime and loved the way that it smelt and made me smell. This brand is certified vegan and cruelty-free. It does not contain any aluminum, propylene glucose, parabens or pthalates and is made from essential oils. // My impression: 6/10. I really liked the way it smelt however, I really did not like the application. It was very rough/grainy and hurt to apply.
Tom’s of Maine Deodorant: This deodorant is vegan, aluminum-free and cruelty-free. // My impression: 5/10. I definitely liked the application better than Schmidt because it was smooth like other deodorants and wasn’t painful. The smell was good however, it did not last as long as Schmidt so I did not wear this when working out.

Kopari Coconut Deodorant: I love the Kopari brand because I love the smell of coconut and this deoderant is made with coconut water and coconut milk. It does not contain any phthalates, alunimum, baking soda and parabens. // My impression: 9/10. I really love using this product. It was a smooth application, made me smell really nice and did not rub off on my clothing. It was a tad bit sticky sometimes when I applied it but overall, my favorite one.
PiperWai Deodorant: This cruelty-free and vegan deodorant contains activated charcoal which absorbs any wetness, leaving you dry and stain-free. It contains skin-conditioning ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter to help smooth and nurture the skin. // My impression: 8.5/10. It is really hard to get over the fact that it is black deodorant. I really like the smell and think it works all day long. However, it does get residue on my clothing which is kinda annoying.
Crystal Invisible Deodorant: This is made with essential oils and contains baking soda which will absorb excess moisture. There is no aluminum, parabens or artificial fragrances. I have the roll on deodorant and I’m not a fan, however, they do have a regular deodorant stick as well which I would love to try. // My impression 5/10. I do like that it has essential oils and no chemicals however, I did not like the roller-ball format and have had better all day coverage from other brands. {But, I’m sure I will have a different rating when I try the stick}
